Part of the point of these "long run" posts is to share something that I learned during the week without having to build a whole post around the thought. So when I was told this week that I needed to have a root canal procedure the first thing I thought was F*** this is going to suck, then I thought maybe I could use the experience for a blog post (it's weird how my mind works). I figured I'd discuss dealing with pain in a root canal and pain in building a business. However, thanks to Central Ohio Endodontics it was pretty much a non-event. Got there yesterday at 8:00 am, was out at 9:30 and everything is fine today so my pain post is out the window.
I did learn two things from the experience though.
- First, it is difficult to drink when your mouth is numb and not end up with the drink all over your shirt.
- Second, you need to "face the fear" and go forward anyway. The anticipation is usually worse than the actual event. As a business owner it important to be prepared, know what needs to be done and go. Typically things won't be as bad as you might think. Don't become paralyzed by the unknown ~ Execute!
Quick Tip: Sometimes when you are having trouble getting past the uncertainty or fear you look for anything else to focus on. For example, if you don't like to make sales calls you may procrastinate and get distracted by other, less important items on your to do list and not get to the sales call. A great way I have found to battle this is to set a side one hour when you know you are at your best (for me it is the morning) to do nothing but the most important things for your business. If you are dreading picking up the phone to make sales calls during that one hour all you would focus on is sales. Once the hour is up you can move on to other things.
